When we think about sustainability in the built environment, a vocal booth or recording booth probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But Studiobricks, the Barcelona-based manufacturer behind some of the world’s most respected modular soundproof booths, has made environmental responsibility a cornerstone of how it designs and builds its products. And the results speak for themselves, both acoustically and ecologically.
From Foam to Forward-Thinking
For years, the acoustic industry relied heavily on conventional foam and virgin materials for sound absorption. Whether you were fitting out a VO booth for voiceover work, a vocal booth for music recording, or a dedicated recording booth for a production studio, foam was the default. Studiobricks recognised this was an area ripe for change.
After two years of research and experimentation with new production methods, the company overhauled its approach to acoustic insulation entirely, eliminating traditional foam and replacing it with materials built from recovered waste.
Today, every Studiobricks booth is constructed using recycled foam made from upholstery residues for acoustic insulation, combined with recycled denim as wall insulation. These aren’t token gestures toward greener manufacturing. They reflect a genuine shift in how the company sources and processes raw materials, turning discarded textiles into high-performance sound barriers.
The Eco 45: Recycled PET That Outperforms
Perhaps the most significant material innovation is the Eco 45 acoustic absorber panel, made entirely from recycled PET. Studiobricks collects single-use plastic containers and transforms them into absorber panels with a 45mm thickness and a density of 25 kg/m3. These panels are used to dress the interiors of every booth in the music and production line, from compact voiceover booths to large custom recording rooms.
What makes this particularly compelling is that the switch to recycled PET isn’t a trade-off. The new Eco Line acoustic panels are around 20% more acoustically effective than traditional foam equivalents, delivering better reduction of reverberation time and improved sound dampening in both directions. Sustainability and performance are moving in the same direction.
The same recycled PET material features in the bass trap range. The Corner BTrap PET3060 is constructed from solid 100% recycled PET with a density of 25 kg/m3, available in two thicknesses to handle low-frequency absorption, making it a natural companion for any serious vocal booth or recording booth setup.
A Circular Economy Approach
What sets Studiobricks apart is its commitment to the circular economy. Rather than treating end-of-life products as waste, the company brings used plastics and textiles back into the production process as raw material for new sound isolation panels and wall absorbers. This approach limits energy consumption, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and keeps materials out of landfill.
The structural elements of the booths are primarily made from NAF MDF (No Added Formaldehyde). All adhesives are water-based, and fire-retardant eco-materials are used throughout, with zero VOC emissions and certified Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) standards. This matters particularly in the Australian market, where green building standards are increasingly shaping procurement decisions.
Certified Credentials
Studiobricks’ environmental commitments are backed by third-party certification. The company holds EcoVadis certification for sustainable performance, with the Bronze Medal placing it among the top 24 companies qualified in the Furniture Manufacturing sector at the time of certification. The Eco Line also qualifies for ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management systems, alongside ISO 9001 for quality management.
For Australian businesses and institutions that need to demonstrate due diligence in sustainable procurement, these credentials matter.
Sustainability Through Longevity
Sustainability isn’t only about what a product is made from. It’s also about how long it lasts and how adaptable it is. Studiobricks booths use a patented interlocking brick system that requires no screws or adhesives to assemble, meaning they can be disassembled, relocated, and reconfigured as needs change. Whether your Studiobricks VO booth needs to move with you, or your recording booth needs to expand to accommodate a growing studio, the system adapts without generating construction waste.
